Summer PicnicThe CNYC 20th Annual Picnic wias held at Elwood Park, in Elwood, Long Island on Sunday July 6th. Despite the difficulties with changes of Town permits, dates, locations and a weekend of rain, the picnic came off! The food was good as always, and Domnic Karcic played Croatian melodies on the accordion. CNYC will work with the Town next year too make sure there are no mix-ups with the permits, and we will return to Centerport Beach. Croatian New Yorker Club Trustees MeetingThe CNYC Board of Trustees held a meeting in May at the Djerdan ( Bosnian) restaurant in Manhattan. Agenda items included have a subgroup of Trustees focus on getting the Croatian Life Stories Oral History videotapes transferred to a uniform DVD format, and then to re-commence making tapes and conducting oral history interviews. The subgoup is comprised of Marijana Sarich, Paul Novosel, and Matt Segota. The Board emphasized the need to publicize the picnic, organize the postponed Business Person of the Year Luncheon, seek other events and activities for the autumn, and set a date for the Christmas Party. Croatian Relief Services – Fairview, New JerseyIn past years the CNYC has assisted Father Gio Belanich of CRS with various medical supply and clothing drives, most recently a clothing drive for the Gulf Coast Croatian victims of Hurricane Katrina. We will be interested in investigating how we can help CRS again in the near future. Oral History Project – Croatian Life StoriesThis is currently the CNYC’s most ambitious project. Begun a number of years ago, The CNYC working in conjunction with the CFU (Croatian Fraternal Union) in Pittsburgh, began making oral history interview tapes with Croatian immigrants and Croatian-Americans. A guidebook to making tapes was written, training workshops were held. Many tapes have been made in locations around the country including New Jersey, Pennsylvania, Illinois, New York, Michigan, Nebraska, Colorado.etc. Tapes need to be catalogued, abstracted and duplicated. A viewing module needs to be set up at the CFU Museum. More training workshops are necessary, and the many requests for interviews need to be accommodated. People with electronic video skills or interests in interviewing are sought. CFU Naïve Art CollectionThe CNYC working with the American Folk Art Museum in New York is assisting the CFU Museum in Pittsburgh in evaluating its Croatian naïve art collection, and determining the best means of exhibiting and preserving it. Croatian Business Person of the YearThe business person of the year award luncheon, postponed because of a death in the family of the recipient, needs to be re-organized. Holiday PartyA committee needs to be formed to organize a holiday party. CFU Lodge? The Croatian New Yorker Club was formed when the CFU was not licensed in New York. There was thought that if the CFU was licensed in New York State that the CNYC might transition into becoming a lodge. This subject needs to be reviewed now that the CFU is licensed in New York State.
