Summer Picnic -2009

Croatian New Yorker Club Trustees' Meeting - March 2010

The  Board of Trustees Meeting met in March and discussed upcoming projects  such as the mural, community service, and responded to various requests from individuals seeking information about their ancestry.

Croatian New Yorker Club Trustees' Meeting March 2009

The CNYC Board of Trustees held a meeting in March 6, 2009  at  the Djerdan ( Bosnian) restaurant in  Manhattan. Agenda items included: Organizing the postponed Business Person of the Year Luncheon, Updates on the Croatian Life Stories Oral History Project, Croatian Relief Services Assistance, taking on a Croatian Heritage Mural project, Community service work,  the Christmas Party, A Croatian Genealogy Workshop, and Organizing a CFU Lodge on Long Island.

Croatian Relief Services – Fairview, New Jersey

In past years the CNYC has assisted Father Gio Belanich of  CRS with various medical supply and clothing drives, including  a clothing drive for the Gulf Coast Croatian victims of Hurricane Katrina.

Father Gio has been quite active in relief work in Haiti for the last several years. With the recent earthquake there, there are many needs. To learn more about Father Gio's work in Haiti,  go to:www.croatianrelief.org

Oral History Project – Croatian Life Stories

This is currently the CNYC’s most ambitious project. Begun a number of years ago, The CNYC working in conjunction with the CFU (Croatian Fraternal Union) in Pittsburgh, began making oral history interview tapes with Croatian immigrants and Croatian Americans. A guidebook to making tapes was written, training workshops were held.  Many tapes have been made in locations around the country including New Jersey, Pennsylvania, Illinois, New York, Michigan, Nebraska, Colorado.etc. Tapes need to be catalogued, abstracted and duplicated. A viewing module needs to be set up at the CFU Museum. More training workshops are necessary, and the many requests for interviews need to be accommodated. The first batch of DVD transfers have been completed  and were evaluated. They have a cinema verite look and sound to them. Another  batch of tapes will be now be delivered  for transfer. Much interest was expressed by Board trustees to take a road trip to  Mississippi and Louisiana to conduct interviews and make tapes in the old Dalmatian communities there. This past summer interviews were conducted in New Hampshire.

Holiday Party

The  CNYC  2009 Christmas Party   was held on  Sunday December 13th 2009 at the Istria Club in Astoria, Queens.  The food as always, was terrific! The door prize was won by Fabio Karcic.

CFU Lodge

The Croatian New Yorker Club was formed when the CFU was not licensed in New York. The CFU is now fully licensed in New York State. The spawning of a CFU Lodge is to perpetuate Croatian heritage and culture by means of a strong umbrella organization lik ethe CFU. A  suggestion that has been discussed is  to try to create a mega-lodge out of the smaller NY area lodges. If interested in this idea  please e-mail  us.

Croatian Heritage Mural Project

The idea of creating a Croatian heritage mural came up some years ago, and was explored with then Queens Borough President Clare Schulman's office. The project was to involve many ethnic communities, but never got off the ground. The CNYC is now interested in re-exploring the project on an independent basis. Photos of the Immigrant's Mural at Denver's International Airport and the Cochrane, Alberta, Canada town murals were seen and thought to be quite impressive and inspirational. A committee will be formed to search for a site and to determine how this can be accomplished. If you know of a building wall in Queens or Manhatan that could be used and is available, please notify us.

Community Service Work

The idea of taking on a small community service project such as cleaning a park, or planting  some trees or helping a museum in New York is being explored.

ImageNew Book by Grant Karcich: THE HISTORY AND FAMILIES OF UNIJE, A COMPILED HISTORY AND FAMILY GENEALOGIES FOR THE ISLAND OF UNIJE,CROATIA

Author Grant Karcich has done extensive research about Unije, the Croatian island of his forebears. Unije is the western most island of the Kvarner archipelago, in the Adriatic Sea. It is a relatively small island, approximately 10 square miles, and with a year round population of less than one hundred persons. Karcich writes about  the history of the island's setlement, and about the families that came to live there over the centuries. The book details how most of the population has resettled  in the United States, where today several thousand people of Unijski origins now reside. The book is published by Llumina Press, 2008, and is available online from Amazon.com
